Contingents from 20 Walking Bus schemes across Kent and Medway gathered in Canterbury's Longmarket on Saturday, May 26, at the end to national summer Walk to School Week for the record attempt.
Led by the Pipe and Drum Platoon from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5th Battalion, the column headed down Canterbury High Street, along St Margaret's Street and through the Marlowe Arcade and Whitefriars shopping centre on route to the public gardens where civic leaders greeted the Big Bus from the band stand.
Lord Mayor of Canterbury Cllr Cyril Windsor praised families for their involvement in the green walk to school scheme and said how proud and enthusiastic he was that Walking Buses had taken 100,000 school run journeys off Kent's streets over the last 12 months. "It is a tremendous achievement," he said.
Birthdays certificates were presented to a number of schemes to celebrate long operation of their buses. These included:
- Eight years: Minster, Thanet
- Five years: Mundella, Folkestone; St Augustine's Tunbridge Wells; Sundridge and Brasted.
- Four years: St Andrew's, Medway; Sturry, Canterbury.
- Three years: Blean, Canterbury; Herne Bay Infants.
- Two years: Joy Lane, Whitstable.
- One year: Pilgrim's, Medway; Rose Street, Sheerness; Walderslade, Medway.
